Cancun’s Climate Summit

This week the United Nation (UN) hosted a climate change summit in Cancun, Mexico. According to reports from Democracy Now, Bolivia walked away from the talks due to uncommitted countries. Japan’s officials said that they won’t be signing any agreement and the reason of this Japanese’s action due to the aggressive development to the Chinese’s economy.

According to the UN there is a found that developed countries will pay into which is estimated to be $100 billion to help undeveloped countries to reduce their green gas and develop renewable fuel.

The U.S claims that the responsibilities should be shared with the up coming developing countries as well such Brazil, China, and India. Until today the U.S. has not committed to this accord. In the last century we have been one of the country that has generated most CO2 in the world and now China, since 2007, has take over as the worlds CO2 emitter. According to Greenpeace Brazil and Indonesia have decreased their amount of deforestation drastically.

“Indonesia may soon put a moratorium on cutting forests, and Brazil is likely to vote any day on even stronger forest policy.” said Greenpeace.

The U.S. needs to come to an agreement to help a most need world which in my opinon should be considerate as in state of emergency. But this duty should not be done by this country alone. The rest of the developed European and Asian countries should become proactive in this matter, because the countries  who generated more CO2 suffered less eco environmental impact (for now) than those less undeveloped countries. This duty has to be done by every body and the ones the generated more CO2 should be more accountable.

Our world is in danger, we are close to become an endanger specie  and these countries are playing the blaming game. Meanwhile, the countries who are suffering the most are the same who have been exploited from these developed countries. Nothing ever change. Always screwing the little ones.

In another issue, Japanese whales’ fleets are doing their annual hunting to savagely kill one thousand whales for their industry even some of those species are in the endangers list. Always putting our pleasures before others nature’s specimens!

Global Warming Awareness: Running Out Steam

According to a report by NPR, this past Sunday, people in this country are beginning to believe that Global Warming is a fallacy, that all the studies done over the last decade are over exaggerated.  Are the melting of the poles not a proof of what’s going on? Are these people out their mind?

Humans tend to believe in Holy Books and a Savior that will come down from the heaven and  take them to an eternal life, that sounds pretty exaggerated to me. They have been waiting for more than two thousand years and nothing have happened! yet there are no scientific proof that it has happen or that it will ever happen.

Now let’s analyze these events, we are experiencing extreme temperatures due to deforestation, frequent natural disasters than a hundred years ago, water levels are raising due to melting ice in the poles, pollution in our oceans is killing marine life that means that our food chain it’s about to suffer an unprecedented change that will affect every single living organism in this planet, more species are despairing from the face of the earth due to our own fault.

According to experts, it’s unpredictable the ramifications of these events. The human race and environment has not experienced anything similar since mankind has been keeping records. There are always conspiracy theories that will follow issues like this but for sure there are very strong economical interests, such as corporation, behind this movement that could affect the necessity of keep moving toward a better and greener future for our ecosystem.

Yes, I am skeptic when it comes to religion because I can’t see it nor I cant’ feel it, but I can see and feel our environment changing and that is a fact. I don’t need a “Holy Book” to tell me that.

Proposition 23 – A backwards Solution!

Today marks the six moths anniversary since the worst oil disaster of the U.S. history. Eleven workers were killed as well as thousands of marine life were affected and miles of beaches were tinted with oil. As usual today has gone undetected by the mainstream media due to lack of interest of issues that could affect millions of people for decades to come. Many efforts were made to prevent deep sea oil drilling but early this month the federal government went ahead and approved to continue such practice due to raising unemployment in that region. Political agendas should keep moving toward a environmental friendly solutions instead of fading away from this issues.

In California, according to Greenpeace, Coalition for Clean Air and the American Lung Association say that Proposition 23 is backed by oil Texas companies. This initiative will suspend the control of air pollution in California until the unemployment drops to 5.5 percent. This means that any company that is under state regulation could have a license to pollute in the name of the “Economy or Unemployment.”  Our state government raised our sale taxes 1.5 percent a couple years ago and it didn’t make a dent to our economy, what makes them think this proposition can help our economy by allowing unscrupulous corporations to pollute our environment.

In the other hand, Meg Whitman, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, says that Green technology isn’t the right answer to generated jobs in California. She wants to suspend the 2006 Global Warming law and re-think it along with the estate economy. For decades California has been a leader in new technology and the environment but in the last few years it hasn’t even made it to the top ten environment friendly estates. It seems that some people are reluctant to a positive change and want to keep the same old attitude toward the environment.
Knowing what happened six months ago in the Gulf of Mexico, why politicians want to keep messing with California’s environment, beaches or the development of new technology. Why a Texan oil company has to have a “say” on California political issues? California’s environment should be decide by californians not by corporations, let along out of estate companies or politicians, who have no sense of the effects of global warming.

Be a Pro-active: Preventing Trash Get to Our Oceans

The Heal the Bay organization has hosted several events in the past weeks to bring awareness to out environment. On September 25th this organization will be hosting a cleanup at the Sepulveda Basin and it’s open to the public. This event is target to remove items such as plastic bags or any kind of trash which could end up in the oceans. Most of the items found in the oceans are grocery plastic bags, plastic snack bags, cigaret butts, plastic bottles, plastic fast food wrappers and many plastic relate items. All of us can be a part of the solution by being proactive toward this ecological problem. Some suggestions to keep our oceans clean can be from buying less products that are made from plastic, keep your home front curve clear of trash, while walking you dog in your neighborhood  keep a trash bag with you in case you see a bottle or plastic bag on the ground. All these little actions can make a big difference in our eco-system.

In an article aired on NPR and published by the Republic on the environment makes a good  debate on which to decide: a  better life for mankind or a better environment. You  be the judge.

I believe that we as human beings have a duty to maintaing and prolong our Mother Nature with our own actions. We need to responsible for what we do in this life.

Plastic Bags

Last Week, the California State Senate sided with corporations lobbies to defeat the new proposal to ban plastic bags from grocery stores. This decision came as a shocking outcome, I believe that most of Californians or environmentalist didn’t expected this result. Their excuse of the defeat was to preserve jobs in California. It seems that in Sacramento there is a one way street and that is the lobbies way. Global Warming and the protection of our environment doesn’t reflect the interest of lobbies nor of our politicians.
They should be require to understand the serious impact of plastic bags in our oceans and the marine life, in order to be part of a distinguish position in our government. By knowing this information, they may understand the impact of their decision to our beautiful marine life or beaches. Jobs can be created with the ability to be innovators. Once marine life is gone, it’s gone!
